As the rich Swedish family celebrates its patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, crying and whispers), the news of World War II’s outbreak reaches its remote Baltic Island – and a happy mood turns horror. The family descends into a state of psychological devastation, which was wonderfully impressed by the Tarkovsky Arrest Palette about the illuminated gray washing through the gloomy landscape around their homes. (The cinematography of the film is Sven Nykvist, a longtime collaborator of Ingmar Bergman). Alexander, a philosopher, due to lack of human spirituality, the likelihood of some disappearance is the biggest victim and he falls into Faustian’s deal with God to save his loved ones from the fear that grabs them. The director’s last film, made by dying of cancer, is the victim of Tarkovsky’s personal statement, a deep moving, redemphry tragedy overcome to unforgettable images and heart -translating emotions.
